Upon your arrival in Moshi, Tanzania, which serves as the gateway town to Mount Kilimanjaro, you will meet with your trekking company and guide. They will provide you with a detailed briefing and conduct an equipment check to ensure you have everything you need for the trek. Afterward, you will spend the night in a hotel in Moshi, allowing you to rest and prepare for the climb ahead.
On the second day, you will head to the Marangu Gate, which marks the starting point of the Marangu route. At the gate, you will complete the necessary registration and formalities with the park authorities. The hike begins through the lush rainforest zone, accompanied by your guide and porters. As you ascend, you'll notice the vegetation becoming less dense. The day's trek concludes at Mandara Hut, situated at an elevation of 2,700 meters (8,858 feet). You will spend the night at the hut, resting and replenishing your energy for the next day.
Continuing the ascent, you will leave the rainforest behind and traverse through heath and moorland landscapes. This section offers beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding scenery. After a trek of approximately 5-7 hours, you will arrive at Horombo Hut, situated at an altitude of 3,720 meters (12,204 feet). Here, you will spend the night and have an opportunity to further acclimatize to the increasing altitude.
Day four is dedicated to acclimatization, allowing your body to adjust to the altitude and reduce the risk of altitude-related issues. You will have the option to take a short hike to Zebra Rocks or explore the surrounding area near Horombo Hut. This rest day will help prepare you for the challenges ahead as you progress towards the summit. You will stay overnight at Horombo Hut.
Continuing your ascent, you will leave Horombo Hut and make your way towards Kibo Hut. This part of the journey takes you through the alpine desert zone, known as the "Saddle." The Saddle is a vast flat area located between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. After a trek of approximately 6-8 hours, you will reach Kibo Hut, situated at an altitude of 4,703 meters (15,430 feet). This will be your base camp for the final push to the summit. Take the opportunity to rest, hydrate, and mentally prepare for the summit attempt.
The summit day begins in the early hours of the morning, usually around midnight. You will start the steep ascent towards Gilman's Point, located on the crater rim at an altitude of 5,681 meters (18,638 feet). From Gilman's Point, you will continue along the crater rim to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, standing at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). Upon reaching the summit, you can celebrate your achievement and enjoy the incredible views. Afterward, you will descend back to Kibo Hut, rest briefly, and continue the descent to Horombo Hut. Finally, you will make your way down to the Marangu Gate, where you will complete the necessary paperwork and receive your summit certificates. From there, you will be transferred back to Moshi, where you can rest, celebrate, and reflect on your remarkable adventure.
VerifiedMagnus R2023-03-23Greatest private safari Me, my wife and our two girls 16 and 13 years old had a private safari with FirstSafariJoyce and Ibrahim. We went all the way from Dar Es Salaam to Selous/Nyerere National Park in his safari car (5h). Ibrahim was very experienced in both driving, guiding and to find animals in the park. Lions, giraffs, buffalos, elephant, impalas, zebras, hippos, gnus, crocs and more. We also had a separate boat safari on the river, unfortunately too high water level this time a year to see many crocodiles. Stayed in Mloka Safari Lodge, medium standard with very good food. My wife and I have been on many safaris in younger days but this was the first time for our children. I was recommended this small company from a friend and I can really recommend the same. /Magnus with family from SwedenVerifiedJabily2022-08-30Perfect Country to vsist Game drive was just amazing and Zanzibar island was very spectacular.
