6 Days Kilimanjaro Marangu Route Climb

Combination with e.g. Zanzibar possible!

Tour Overview

The Marangu route is one of the popular trekking routes to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. Here’s some information about the Marangu route:

  1. Difficulty Level: The Marangu route is considered to be one of the less challenging routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is often referred to as the “Coca-Cola” route because it offers huts with basic amenities along the way, making it a more comfortable option compared to other routes.
  2. Duration: The typical duration for the Marangu route is 5 to 6 days, although some operators may offer variations. It’s important to note that acclimatization is crucial for a successful summit attempt, so taking enough time to adapt to the altitude is recommended.
  3. Scenery: The Marangu route is known for its diverse landscapes. As you ascend, you will pass through lush rainforests, moorlands, and eventually reach the alpine desert zone near the summit. The route provides stunning views of the surrounding landscapes.
  4. Accommodation: Unlike other routes that involve camping, the Marangu route offers accommodation in mountain huts. These huts have dormitory-style bunk beds and communal dining areas. It’s important to keep in mind that the huts can get crowded during peak climbing seasons.
  5. Summit: The Marangu route takes climbers to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Uhuru Peak, which stands at an elevation of 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). The final ascent to the summit is usually done overnight, starting from Kibo Hut. It’s a challenging climb, but reaching the top is incredibly rewarding.
  6. Preparation: Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is a strenuous endeavor, and adequate preparation is necessary. Physical fitness training, including cardiovascular exercises and hiking, is recommended. Additionally, it’s essential to pack appropriate clothing, gear, and supplies for the trek. Engaging the services of a reputable trekking company is highly advisable for a safe and organized experience.

At the gate, you will complete the necessary registration and formalities with the park authorities. The hike begins through the lush rainforest zone, accompanied by your guide and porters. As you ascend, you'll notice the vegetation becoming less dense. The day's trek concludes at Mandara Hut, situated at an elevation of 2,700 meters (8,858 feet). • Day 5: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Continuing your ascent, you will leave Horombo Hut and make your way towards Kibo Hut. This part of the journey takes you through the alpine desert zone, known as the "Saddle." The Saddle is a vast flat area located between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. After a trek of approximately 6-8 hours, you will reach Kibo Hut, situated at an altitude of 4,703 meters (15,430 feet). This will be your base camp for the final push to the summit. Take the opportunity to rest, hydrate, and mentally prepare for the summit attempt.

  • Day 6: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Marangu Gate

The summit day begins in the early hours of the morning, usually around midnight. You will start the steep ascent towards Gilman's Point, located on the crater rim at an altitude of 5,681 meters (18,638 feet). From Gilman's Point, you will continue along the crater rim to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, standing at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). Upon reaching the summit, you can celebrate your achievement and enjoy the incredible views. Afterward, you will descend back to Kibo Hut, rest briefly, and continue the descent to Horombo Hut. Finally, you will make your way down to the Marangu Gate, where you will complete the necessary paperwork and receive your summit certificates. From there, you will be transferred back to Moshi, where you can rest, celebrate, and reflect on your remarkable adventure.
